So imagine just for a moment that Pacific Rim was real. That Kaiju (giant scary monsters) just started popping up all over the planet. Now imagine if we didn’t have giant robots to fight them, but instead the Avengers showed up to save us all. Then the X-Men showed up too… and the Inhumans… and the Champions… and the Guardians of the Galaxy. Now imagine that these monsters were showing up every 15 to 20 minutes all over the world. Got all that? So does Cullen Bunn in the Marvel-wide Monsters Unleashed crossover.
Anyone who’s read a Deadpool alt-universe book (Deadpool Kills Deadpool, Deadpool Killustrated, Deadpool: Back in Black) in the last few years knows the work of Mr. Bunn. If you’ve read Magneto you know his work. If you’ve read Dark Horse’s Harrow County or Oni Press’s Hellbreak you’ve also seen some of his work. His horror writing makes for some of the creepiest terror-inducing books on the market right now and with him carrying this horror aspect over into the Marvel U., Monsters Unleashed can only prove for a good time. Only 2 issues in and we get the extra added bonus of the gorgeous pencils of Steve McNiven and Greg Land to stare at and drool over.
Without spoiling anything, all I can say about these books are they’re great monster fighting fun. I mean who didn’t watch Godzilla movies as a kid and root for Godzilla? I found myself wanting the monsters to win immediately even though the entire beloved Marvel Universe was fighting them. They have a few 1.MU crossover books to go along with the series as well and most of them were great with my only gripe being the Avengers 1.MU book being a pretty much word-for-word shot-for-shot duplication of Monsters Unleashed #1.
Mr. Bunn has pretty much any and every aspect of the Marvel U. represented here with regards to super teams. Even a nod to his work on Fearless Defenders has Valkyrie fighting monsters in Scotland and Elsa Bloodstone as the premiere monster hunter in the Marvel U. taking the lead investigator role and looking to figure out what exactly is causing the attacks. While I don’t see this book as making any major changes to the Marvel Universe, I think in the past few years where we've had world-changing crossovers that more or less amounted to nothing, having a huge monster-filled donnybrook with no expected ramifications to the 616 (is it even 616 anymore after Secret Wars?) is something much needed. If nothing else than to blow off a little steam and get back to just having a good old-fashioned Pier 6 monster / superhero brawl.
I would really like to see more of a horror aspect added as Cullen Bunn is simply amazing at what he does when he does horror. I definitely recommend this book for anyone wanting to see a ton of action, monsters, heroes, chaos and destruction in the Might Marvel Manner.
