The end of all humanity is coming, and James Tynion IV & Eryk Donovan are spearheading it… again.
About a year ago I picked up a book that was recommended by my local comic book store manager called Memetic and I instantly fell in love. I was enthralled by the entire concept of the book; “an internet meme that kills you” and I waited on pins and needles for the second and third issues. They delivered spectacularly and I went around telling anyone I could to check it out. The Good Times Sloth became an un-official anti-hero of mine and the mixture of chaos, insanity and just overall dread made it one hell of a good read.
When I heard James & Eryk were doing it all over again with Cognetic, I couldn’t wait for it to come out. I sat here thinking about what comic I wanted to review this week, as there were A LOT of great books out to choose from, but only for a second as I quickly remembered Cognetic #1 was in my stack and immediately broke my “order of reading” protocols to dive right into their latest opus.
They delivered. All the things that were great about Memetic were there; the chaos, the sense of dread in the air, the insane build-up as they worked their way to the twist at the end. Eryk’s artwork draws you in as he knows just how to psychologically visualize James’ words and make the reader feel the impending doom. Just when you think you know where James is going with it he twists and turns in the opposite direction. I gotta say though, I love the fact that they tell these stories in 3 issues. That in such a short run they can grab you, smack you around for a bit and then spit you out weary of the world they created. I cannot wait to see how the rest of this story plays out and would absolutely subscribe to anything else they collaborate on.
