We’re spotlighting talent in the cosplay community!

Every month, The Variant showcases cosplayers who display talent, creativity, and a positive voice within the cosplay community.

"Growing up, and even till this day, I have always been interested in the fantasy world.
Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, etc. were all my go-to
escapes. It doesn’t matter if it was books, movies, video games…you name it!
Anything to take me away on a fun adventure in another world!

The first time I remember wanting to cosplay was when I watched Revenge of the Sith.
I was captivated by Aayla Secura, the blue Twi’lek Jedi. I thought, “how cool would
it be to dress up as a Twi’lek?!” Thus began my research into cosplay and how to
become a Twi’lek. I was in a situation for a long time where I could not
cosplay but the urge never went away. In fact it kept growing with all the
ideas I had. I eventually got out of a long term relationship and
part of finding myself was the start of my cosplay journey. I could
finally embrace who I was and be proud of it.

After months, I was able to put together my first cosplay- a purple Twi’lek. I
didn’t spend a lot of money or a ton of time on it, but I was so happy with my
first cosplay. And that one cosplay has turned into multiple over the past few years.
Cosplay is my safe space and comfort and I can only hope any cosplayer feels the
happiness that I do. It doesn’t matter if you closet cosplay, find stuff at Goodwill,
buy it from a costume shop, spend $10, spend $1000, spend 10 minutes on it or
spend 10 months on it…. it’s all cosplay! I hope everyone remembers this while
putting their cosplays together. Everyone has to start somewhere!!"

This month we welcome FyreHeart Cosplay to our Variant Cosplay Spotlight fam!!
You may notice that last month and this month are a little Star Wars heavy. When we coordinated our shoots last month we decided to do a little crossover and that crossover became a story idea. Join Commander Fyre and the mysterious Twi’lek bounty hunter Ly’raa as they race across the galaxy hunting for the The Lightsaber of Darth Vader!!!

The Emperor is dead.

Long live the Emperor!

After turning to the dark side, Rey Palpatine killed Kylo Ren, took over the First Order and crushed the Resistance. Shocking the galaxy, she then publicly murdered her grandfather The Emperor and re-claimed the Empire as her birthright, obliterating freedom throughout the galaxy.

Rey, becoming obsessed with Sith lore, dispatches Commander Fyre to the furthest reaches of the galaxy in search of the one prize that eluded all of her predecessors: The Lightsaber of Darth Vader! While Vader’s saber hilt was destroyed during the destruction of the second Death Star, the Kyber crystal inside remained intact and was dispersed somewhere around the

nine moons of Endor.

Now as the Sith Empress closes her fist around the last remnants of both the Rebellion and the Resistance, a new threat to her power arises from the ashes. Unknown to Rey, the mysterious Twi'lek bounty hunter Ly’raa has also been searching for Vader’s Kyber crystal and has tracked its location to Gouuls, the fourth moon of Endor.

When Rey Palpatine killed Snoke it was expected. When she dispatched Kylo Ren It was surprising but expected to happen sooner or later none the less. When she decapitated then defenestrated her grandfather the Emperor live from the Senate building on Coruscant, all bets were off. Commander Fyre was privy to all three events and it’s rumored that she secretly helped Rey in her machinations to become the Empress of the Sith.

Commander Fyre grew up around the shipyards on Ringo Vinda in the Mid Rim region of the galaxy. Learning ship building and repair came like second nature to her and led her to become an accomplished pilot of many if not all ships in the Imperial fleet. Cold and calculating Fyre is proficient in most forms of hand to hand combat and as a sharp shooter she ranks among the highest in the First Order.

During an attack on the Ringo Vindan shipyards by the Resistance, Fyre piloted an Imperial Class Star Destroyer directly into a Resistance frigate rumored to have General Leia Organa aboard. Regardless that General Organa escaped unscathed and a Star Destroyer wasted, Fyre was commended and then promoted to Commander by Snoke in an attempt to stoke the ire of Kylo Ren for the attempt on his mother’s life. His disdain for Fyre became more prominent and blatant to the point where she jumped at the chance to help Rey Palpatine remove the would-be Supreme Leader permanently.

Ly’raa
As outbreaks from the “Free Ryloth Movement” spread across the Outer Rim Territories, Darth Vader and Emperor Palpatine traveled to Ryloth in order to close the fist of the Galactic Empire around the Twi’lek home world. It was during this visit that Vader and Palpatine met the female Twi’lek Drua. While Vader was ordered to kill Drua and most of her village, years later she was witnessed alive on Ryloth and with a child. That child was Ly’raa.

Most of her life Ly’raa grew up sequestered from the rest of the Twi’lek society on Ryloth. While most Twi’lek women were forced into slavery, Ly’raa and Drua lived in strangely undisturbed solitude. Ly’raa always felt secure but Drua was always looking over her shoulder. She was very kind but had a sadness about her that Ly’raa could never understand. The one time Ly’raa asked about her father all Drua would tell her was that he was a good man who played a much bigger part in the galaxy than she would ever understand.

"Life always seemed to fall into place in front of Ly’raa. During her sheltered life outside the city of Kala’uun on Ryloth, she attended the best schools and was recruited immediately after graduation by the Empire to their Officer training academy. She excelled at everything she did and was extremely proficient as an Imperial sniper and demolitions expert. She was the only Twi’lek in the program. Ever.
After the fall of the Empire Ly’raa’s life took a turn. The First Order had no use for her as their restrictions on non-human officers were worse than the Empire’s. Rather than let a highly skilled officer with intimate knowledge of the First Order loose on the galaxy, the First Order opted to kill her…or at least they tried.

She found herself wandering the Outer Rim territories and ended up on Felucia where she met Embo, a retired Kyuzo bounty hunter. Embo, in his prime, was one of the most skilled bounty hunters in the galaxy and was even said to have fought the Jedi General Anakin Skywalker to a standstill a handful of times during the Clone Wars. Over the years the two even gained a mutual respect for each other as combatants. Considering Ly’raa’s rumored lineage, her meeting of Embo was much more than just a simple happenstance and Embo proceeded to take her in and train her in the ways of the bounty hunter."

After the destruction of the second Death Star, the ruins of Palpatine’s throne room that had fallen to Kef Bir had been scoured and scavenged yet there were no reports or findings of the lightsaber of Darth Vader. While some Imperial tacticians believed it to be floating somewhere in space Commander Fyre had other thoughts. As a pilot and engineer she had watched hundreds of ships both large and small explode. She had studied the Death Star plans and its destruction methodically. Palpatine’s throne room was located at highest point of the Death Star and atop the reactor core’s main ventilation shaft. All accountings of Vader’s betrayal of Palpatine before the Death Star exploded mentioned Skywalker cutting off the Sith Lord’s hand. She surmised that his lightsaber wasn’t in the throne room when the Death Star exploded which means it probably fell into the reactor core vent. While the lightsaber itself would have been incinerated during the detonation of the reactor, the kyber crystal within should have remained intact. Imperial records indicated that most of the reactor core was on Gouuls, the fourth moon of Endor.

As Commander Fyre arrived at the wreckage on Gouuls she noticed a saucer shaped ship which she sliced the registration from as the Guillotine. Its last known owner was a Kyuzo named Embo who was listed as a bounty hunter. “This is no coincidence” she thought as she landed to the far side of the reactor core to avoid notice. Upon entering the wreckage she found she was in fact, noticed as a sniper bolt hit the side of her helmet knocking it off and throwing her backwards to the ground. “Leave now or the next one won’t miss” a voice shouted out from the darkness as Fyre immediately drew her blaster and took cover.

As Ly’raa landed on Gouuls she felt a presence that had been familiar to her but it was usually always fleeting. This time the presence lingered and she felt like it was calling her directly to the burned out wreckage of the Death Star reactor core. As she entered the charred structure she caught a glimpse of a red pulsing light embedded on one side of the core. She used her vibro-blade to dig out around what was a small red crystal and held it in her hand staring at it for what seemed to be an eternity. It felt right. It felt like it was hers. It felt like a part of her was inside it. Every moment of her life culminated to this point as she touched the kyber crystal from the lightsaber of Darth Vader.

While Ly’raa’s mind was focused on the crystal she failed to notice the Imperial Tie Interceptor landing on the far side of the core. The proximity droids from the Guillotine alerted her to the ship and she stashed the crystal in her belt. She climbed up on to a higher platform inside the core and set the scope on her rifle. She watched as a lone Imperial Stormtrooper entered, but she was obviously someone of rank as they didn’t give Interceptors to the grunts.

She fired a warning shot and shouted “Leave now or the next one won’t miss!” as the Stormtrooper dove behind a control station. There was only one way out and the Imperial was blocking it. “Whatever you think you’ve found doesn’t belong to you. I’m here on orders from the Empress Palpatine herself. Surrender now and I might let you live!” As the words echoed through the reactor core they were immediately followed up by a metallic clink and beeping that Commander Fyre knew to be the timer on a thermal detonator as she watched it roll past the control station she was hiding behind...
