June Cosplay Spotlight

Awkward Turtle or Chameleon?

We're spotlighting talent in the cosplay community!

Every month, The Variant showcases different cosplayers who display talent, creativity, and a positive voice for the cosplay community!

Hello! My name is Serena, and I’m Awkward Turtle Cosplay.

I’m an awkward blob of a person who lives up to her name, and it’s my personal mission to be as weird as humanly possible! I like to laugh, and being a comedian for the sole purpose of getting others to laugh is something I enjoy a lot. I’m a pretty derpy individual who likes to be silly and goofy!

I’ve been cosplaying for about three years now, but I’ve only really been making my own costumes for a little over a year. I taught myself how to sew, craft armor, build cosplay weapons, how to apply makeup well, and so on. I wanted to get better as a cosplayer, so I thought, “why not just do it myself?” I’m always improving my techniques and my cosplays and I hope to eventually achieve s more professional level one day.

Watching RWBY was originally what got me into cosplay. When I saw Cinder Fall first walk on screen, I thought, “oh, I just have to be her.” I debuted her at Animazement 2016 with silk fire fans, and that was when I saw myself starting to really come out of my awkward shell. Since then, I’ve expanded to other fandoms, and I’ve cosplayed things like Pokémon, My Little Pony, Marvel, DC, Disney, Noragami, Miraculous Ladybug, Doki Doki Literature Club, and so on.

I really enjoy cosplay because I’m in school to become a prop master and a costume designer. Cosplay is a test of my skills, and I love getting to learn new things with each costume! Cosplay is such a wonderful community, and I love getting to meet new people through it. All of my closest friends who I consider to be family were people I met while at conventions. I don’t see myself ever stopping my adventures in cosplay and if anything I hope to make a career out of this!

This month the super talented Awkward Turtle brings us five of her AMAZING cosplays, four of which were shot at Animazement in Raleigh, NC just last weekend. I will say that Awkward Turtle is continually stumping one of our fearless photogs (we won't say which one) when she shows up in a different cosplay multiple times of the day at cons, hence the nickname "The Chameleon"!

C&C Media Design got us some great shots of her as Pokémon Ranger Solana, Formal Bishamon (from Noragami), Disney's Kim Possible and Monika (from Doki Doki Literature Club).

In addition Tomisina and I saw her Ms. Marvel (Carol Danvers) at a previous convention and knew we had to get a set of those as well.
