January Cosplay Spotlight
Like a phoenix from the ashes...
We're spotlighting talent in the cosplay community! Every month, The Variant will showcase a different cosplayer displaying talent, creativity, and a positive voice for the community!
We here at The Variant like to give our photographers a modicum of creative control. When Kimberly came in and said she shot a Cosplay Spotlight that wasn't on the books, we were a little hesitant at first... until she showed us the pictures and told us who the subject was.
Olivia Mears is the creator of Avant-Geek. She's a Western Carolina University grad with Bachelors degrees in Fine Art and Science in Education. Her original designs in fine art, fashion, cosplay, and 'wearable art' of unconventional materials have been featured nationally and internationally.
Olivia has had her work shown in the Huffington Post, ABC News, WLOS, Good Morning America, On Air With Ryan Seacrest, in televised ads for Taco Bell and MTV's 2015 Video Music Awards. She's received national and regional awards for her one-of-a-kind couture dresses, and is world renowned for her works such as "Taco Belle", "PBRmor", and her paper dresses (Wrapping Paper Dress, Toilet Paper Wedding Dress).
Olivia's Phoenix costume was what caught the eye of our fearless photog and we are super excited to present them to you in all their flaming fiery glory!
